Septicaemia or Septicemia is commonly known as Sepsis and is an excess of bacteria in the blood stream resulting from infection in another part of the body such as the abdomen, urinary tract or the skin. It can also result from surgery on these areas of the body.
Symptoms typically start with a high fever progressing to shaking, chills, weakness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Sepsis can also cause infection in the brain (meningitis) or the heart (pericarditis). Sepsis must be treated quickly as risk from death is high.
