Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 19 August 2004 Herbal Help for Humans and their CompanionsOne of my favourite books by Dr. Christiane Northrup "Womens Bodies Womens Wisdom" has a wealth of wholistic guidance for womens conditions and concerns. In one chapter on healing ourselves she asks us to consider the following ideas:
This week we feature:-
Canine - Anal Gland Problems The anal sacs, often called anal glands, are two small sacs situated on either side and a little below the anus. Depending on the breed they may vary in size from a pea to a walnut. With in the walls there are numerous glands that produce a secretion that is stored in the sacs and that is used as a scent on every stool so that each dog can be identified by its fellow canine population. It can happen that the ducts can become blocked causing the sacs to become distended. This causes discomfort and irritation it can also become impacted and infected giving rise to an anal abscess. There are a few things that may help with a dog who is having problems in this area. Keep your dog lean - overweight dogs tend to have more problems with their anal glands. Feed him bones at least 3 times per week to ensure some of his stools are hard which will help with expressing a tiny bit of fluid each time he goes to the toilet. Feed him a high fibre diet eg add pumpkin to his meals. If you feel that there is any component of infection to the problem then look to putting him on a course of blood cleansers see: http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_blood_poisoning.html You could also add crushed French White Millet to his diet as it is high in silica which is an important mineral supporting tissue strength and health. Have a read of the following article regarding a dogs diet: http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/articles_digestive_system_ofadog.html Equine - Emergency Colic A horses whole digestive system can become so traumatised that it can go into spasm at the drop of a hat or following any minor change and this is now becomes the problem, not the original impaction or whatever caused the problem in the first place. A horse in this situation needs repeated and small doses of a blend of Chamomile Tea and Rosehips Tea steeped and left to go cold with a few drops of Rescue Remedy added to every dose as emergency first aid. This horse also needs calm surroundings, to be close to her friends and natural plain feed, no pellets, supplements, vitamins or grains just chaff, hay and Lucerne. Maybe relaxing massage and certainly lots of TLC. If your horse has had numerous visits to a veterinary hospital then they are probably allergic to this as well. Start with this program today you can get all you need from the health food store. Prepare each dose by putting 6 chamomile tea bags with 3 rosehips tea bags in a litre of boiling water. Let it all go cold with the tea bags in it. Then add a couple of drops of Rescue Remedy and give a quarter of it every couple of hours, maybe first as a drench and later mixed with feed. Once you have stabilized your horse that is going into colic we can recommend further herbal medicines. Human - Are You Always Succumbing to Colds and Flu ? If you are always coming down with illness, you probably experience changes in body temperature, your mucus membranes work hard to protect your tender orifices, your nose needs constantly blowing to remove invaders, you may also experience a change of blood pressure. Home Remedies - Red Wine We have all heard of the benefits of a glass of red wine with the evening meal , some of us are probably sceptical and others just enjoy it because.... Red wine contains caprillic acid which interacts with and stimulates the following three essential nutrients of choline, lecithin and cholesterol (good). These three work in partnership and indeed need to be all present to metabolize and support the liver do its myriad of tasks in the body. Aging red wine also has a good supply of cholesterol which assists by way of reducing the liklihood of a heart attack . As well it works with the gall bladder.
