Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 23 June 2004 Herbal Help for Humans and their CompanionsFeeling Strong and Capable."Our body creates our soul as much as our soul creates our body"- David Spangler was right about this because regular movement is a vital part of creating health. Exercise should be part of a commitment to yourself. It would be easy to put it off until all the chores were done; household duties and jobs will always be there even after we are dead! Create your exercise time and enjoy it, what I mean is, don't exercise just because you are fearful of heart disease. To exercise enables our body to remember its past , so it can stretch out with all its intertwined powers of being, thought and reflection. In actual fact, movement allows us to develop our intellectual, emotional and spiritual capacities. The benefits of exercise include less depression, more restful sleep, improved immune system function, increased life expectancy, higher self esteem, stronger bones, better mental efficiency and attitudes, more spontaneity, and enthusiasm for life. Why wouldn't we exercise??? This week we feature:-
How To Know When Its Time To Let Go? We are often asked how to know when it is time to let a much loved pet go peacefully. How long do we try different remedies or medicines and supplements just in case it may be the answer and bring new life to an old friend. We use an old but simple formula that guides you wisely with this difficult question. Get hold of 'Rescue Remedy' and the Bach Flower Remedy 'Gorse' from the health food store. These are both medicines which come in clear liquid form and are given just as a drop or two directly in the mouth. Give a dose of each of these four times per day. Make a concoction by boiling a small amount of fresh parsley, fennel seeds and fenugreek seeds for 5 minutes and then let it stand and go cold. Strain the tea and give a couple of dessertspoons of this by mouth, you may have to use a syringe body and put it straight down their throat. Four doses per day and make up a fresh batch each day. You can put the Rescue Remedy and Gorse drops in this also if you want. If this emergency treatment seems to help over the next 2 or 3 days, bringing new energy, bright eyes, interest in what's happening around then and so on there is hope and we can then send to you a herbal tonic specific to your pets condition to rebalance the metabolism . Canine Diabetes: Diabetes is much more a reflection of a metabolic imbalance than of a diseased pancreas as such and I am able to turn this illness around using herbs which focus on metabolic harmony and tonics for the Liver and Pancreas specifically. Such is the blend of herbs in my Canine Conditioning Mix to be found on my website on: http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_conditioning_mix.html The other simple food which is helpful in these cases is rolled oats like the porridge breakfast cereal. This may be soaked in water and added to feed which should preferably be raw and consist of meaty bones and nothing much else. As a first aid treatment you should get Rescue Remedy from your health food shop and give your colt a few drops two or three times per day for a week or so. You should also make up a herb tea from fresh nettle and fresh sage (80% and 20%) and use the tea to dampen a morning and afternoon feed for a couple of weeks as part of the first aid. If we made up a special mix we would include more specific healing herbs to follow the first aid and work on the brain bruising which would have occurred and to support the repair of broken blood vessels which is a part of concussion. Greasy Heal Greasy Heel has to be seen as a situation where the horses body is trying to clear up some sort of damage with the hoof and since the circulation is so poor in that area it uses the mechanism of discharging waste products through the wall of the heel itself. In our own bodies or higher up the horses leg in the region of big muscles and lots of blood supply it is not necessary to discharge wastes directly to the outside, they can be carried away by the blood and dealt with in this way. One of the mechanisms the body uses, as in the formation of abscesses, is that when waste material has been packed away under the skin they are meant to fester (or become infected) so that this process will be able to break through the skin and allow the discharge. Greasy Heel is like this and treating it with anti-biotics, antiseptics and the like really don't address the real problem although they often appear as in your case to temporarily relieve the discomfort. I find the best treatment is to use stimulants to the circulation within the hoof along with healing and anti-inflammatory herbs internally. I have formulated my Hoof Oil with all this in mind and mostly there is nothing more needed than regular rubbing with this Oil which continues long after all signs of the problem have gone. We are aiming to improve and maintain a slightly improved circulation within the hoof and allow the whole structure to maintain itself in better health. Hoof oil: http://www.herbal-treatments.com/horse_hoof_oil.html Stroke Recovery Stroke is now the third most common cause of death in the Western World. In simple language a stroke is either a blockage or a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain interrupting oxygen supply which results very quickly in the death of brain tissue supplied by the vessels involved. The most common vascular disorder that results in stroke is atherosclerosis, a non-inflammatory degenerative disease that affects segments of almost every blood vessel in the body. Of course similar brain damage can happen with any brain trauma or injury. We address strokes and the damage done with two herbal treatments taken concurrently. The first is a circulation protective mix which will restore the weakened blood vessels in the brain to more normal strength and reduce the chances of reoccurrence of stroke. The second is a vitality and brain function tonic which will assist in the brain reprogramming itself to work around missing or damaged centres and at the same time assist in the muscular and nervous system atrophy resulting from the loss of control. This will assist in the physiotherapeutic exercise recovery program. See the following site for more information: http://www.herbal-treatment.net/herbs_stroke_recovery.html Both these treatments may be given safely and together at a dose level of 20 drops three times daily and after a month or so it is important to make contact and give some detailed feed back on progress and responses to this treatment. Home Remedies - Caring for Thin Skin My mother has beautiful paper thin skin on her hands and arms and therefore often has cuts, grazes and scratches as she frequently enjoys gardening and pets. The most effective remedy we have found is a soft aqueous cream with Calendula, Comfrey and Yarrow extracts added . These herbs ensure very quick healing by removing any infection, stopping the bleeding, pulling the wound together neatly and correctly replicating the skin cells. In fact it works so well that friends from Japan tried it on very dry hands and declared it amazing.
