Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions

Yin and Yang

You all know the familiar Taoist symbol for male and female. In some views it represents the opposites or the duality of life. To be able to discern the polarities in all aspects of our life helps us to progress through our lives and establish what is actual or not, right and wrong. It is our task to walk the path between the polar opposites.

The circle represents the universe, us, sometimes we become bored with our universe and leave the circle and the true task of our life . We can then forget about all that matters and find it difficult to find our way back .

When we forget we can become ill. Illness is the state of running out of energy because we have forgotten that we are the source of energy. We need to regenerate the energy by being still, being quiet, back in the circle.

There are times when we need to remember to look inward to be with our heart and know.

This week we feature:-

Canine - Chronic Kidney Infection

As many of you may know Cranberry is a good maintenance herb for mild Kidney problems but is not going to be useful until the heavy duty healing is underway first.

We have a great deal of experience with Kidney and Urinary Tract problems in dogs and have several articles on the subject describing what you can do yourself and how we can support a dogs recovery.

These articles may be found by clicking the following link:

In the first instance we would be prescribing the Kidney Weakness Mix which is found on:
http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_kidney_weakness.html

We would also make up a chronic Kidney Infection mix combining herbal antibiotics with blood cleansing herbs to clear all the residues of these past infections while at the same time, assisting your dog in recovering from any strong antibiotics they may have been on.

You would also be advised to start a convalescent diet consisting on only one meal a day and this to be raw chicken necks including the bones. We must unload the kidneys and to do this we need to get rid of all processed feed and all snacks so you dog's immunity and metabolism may be completely focussed on healing and clearing toxins from the system.

Equine - Sulphur: A Herbalists Perspective

The period from the mid 1800's to the first world war was a time when early chemists were extolling the virtues of the chemical elements and compounds they were researching. It was a time when Sulphur (Elemental Sulphur), Epson Salts (Magnesium Chloride) and Blue Stone (Copper Sulphate) in particular, were credited with a myriad of uses and wonderful healing powers by both the chemists and healers of the day.

There were many other early compounds used in industry, such as Lead Oxide in paints, Arsenic as a household poison and Graphite in pencils. In the case of Lead and Arsenic these substances have proven to be detrimental to our health and to the environment and the antibacterial properties of Copper Sulphate are no longer used in swimming pools for example, for similar reasons.

Sulphur is a valuable trace element in our horses diet as Owens and Vandermark record, and I am happy to see that they do not endorse flowers of sulphur as a feed additive which has remained popular in some circles for far too long.

The fact is that Molasses, which has been common supplement for horses often given just to sweeten food, is a very valuable source of both Iron and Sulphur and there should be no need at all to use any sulphur supplement beyond a little molasses in the feed regularly.

From the herbalists point of view the combination of Iron and Sulphur has powerful blood cleansing properties and can therefore be very valuable for healing skin conditions and discouraging biting insects, attracted to blood toxins stored just under the skin.

The other high organic source of sulphur is in the herb garlic and particular organic sulphur compounds in this herb are responsible for garlic's antibacterial properties. I therefore recommend that in cases of infection it is advisable to include garlic in the horses diet as a medicine and this is best given as a fresh herb rather than dried granules.

Human - The Importance of Both The Physical and Energetic Aspects of Healing

Every cancer is different but I normally expect a reduction in some of the symptoms and improvement in vitality to show up within the first 3 or 4 weeks. If your cancer is not accompanied by any symptoms then we have to wait to watch for changes in size or appearance of the cancer which normally takes longer.

For those who have any energetic healing modalities available to them I recommend they combine the physical and the energetic in their program. Here for example I often refer patients to Reiki treatment as well as herbs. For others prayer or meditation suits them better. It could well be that where ever you live there is a tradition which embodies such hands on or energetic healing. All cancers involve a problem with the energy in ones aura and these methods work at that level. Just the power of positive thinking supports the energetic side of things as we all know.

My advice therefore is to seek out some non physical support to balance your program. My herbal treatments are a stand alone physical treatment so you don’t need to be taking a whole lot more supplements.. A sensible diet and exercise pattern, herbs and positive energy is all that is required.

Home Remedies - Fennel

Fennel
  • A tea made with a few fresh sprigs of fennel or a level teaspoon of seeds will relieve indigestion. An infusion of the seeds is an excellent carminative, especially for babies. Use 1 teaspoon (5ml) of infusion for colic and gas.

  • Fennel is an effective treatment for respiratory congestion and is a common ingredient in cough remedies.

  • A tea made from fennel helps to stimulate the flow of breast milk. It is sometimes added to baby formula to aid digestion.

  • An infusion also makes a soothing eyewash.

  • Fennel is often used as a pancreatic and digestive stimulant and is safe for diabetics . It can be useful in managing weight as it is able to balance the see-saw effect that many of us experience with high and low blood sugars.

  • Chew the seeds as a breath freshener or to help relieve hiccoughs.

  • Fennel is easy to grow and it can often be seen growing along side the roads. A young fennel root makes a delicious vegetable cut thinly and eaten in a salad or baked or sauted.
