Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 27 October 2004 Herbal Help for Humans and their CompanionsThe history of herbal medicine started way back on Mount Olympus where the Greek Gods played amongst the trees and flowers. In fact the God of healing was Asclepius, he was symbolized by the serpent which represents the renewal of energy . Interestingly the serpent is still part of the symbolic image of the healing staff in mainstream medicine. If you like to research a little more you will find that the ancient Greeks had many wonderful stories about how the plants came in to being. It was here that the great respect for the plant world came into being , many of them were held to be sacred and worshipped as attributes of the Gods. Shamans , roman armies, barber -surgeons, apothecaries and the early monks had a great deal to play in the ongoing history and recording of herbal medicine. There still stands today a charter signed by King Henry VIII allowing herbalists to practise in spite of their differences with surgeons and doctors. King Henry VIII was a keen amateur herbalist , being particularly interested in the preparation of plasters and ointments. The charter itself is remarkable in that it firstly acknowledged that those skilled and knowledgable about herbs were perfectly capable of providing a much needed medical service for the poor men and women , secondly it allowed herbalists to treat a far wider range of diseases than the surgeon. The third point about the charter is that it made it quite clear that herbalists had friends in high places that valued their opinion and thought they deserved protection and patronage. This charter became known as the Quacks Charter as this is what the physicians considered the herbalists. I wonder if anything much has changed . This week we feature:- Feline - AIDS Feline AIDS is quite common and generally is passed on through cats saliva when they fight with each other, this is another good reason to make sure cats are locked up at night. There is a vaccination that can be given (to prevent the cat contracting the disease) and I am sure that your vet can explain it to you. HIV or AIDS is really a problem of the immunity and this can be dramatically improved without compromising any other medication. Obviously HIV also effects organs within the body, namely the blood and lymphatic systems. On top of this the medications commonly prescribed also place a heavy load on the metabolism in general. We regularly prepare tonics which support the critical organs and systems within the body, all cheaply and safely. There will be three mixes in the program and the standard sized bottles I provide for a 3 months treatment program. 1. I would recommend in the first instance a course of Maritime Pine Antioxidant. This is described at the site below: http://www.herbal-treatments.com/maritime_pine_bark_extract_pycnogenol.html 2. I can also provide a special mix to help manage the AIDS symptoms. 3. Sometimes cats with this condition also suffer from respiratory infections caused by the HIV virus breaking down the immune system and would respond well to the Human Family Flu preparation to be found on my website at: http://www.herbal-treatments.com/herbs_flu.html 10 drops twice per day mixed into smelly food like sardines will clear the respiratory infection and if continued will build up the immunity. It would all be fixed within half the bottle. The rest can be kept for any future infection in either the cat or any other family member. Cats should be kept inside at night time and of course during winter to make sure they are at less risk of contracting any secondary infections. Equine - Bone Spurs It is important to address the two underlying reasons behind the development of spurs. We need to improve the circulation and healing potential generally, within the hoof and we need to encourage the reabsorbtion of the spur which can be seen as an excess calcification (like a scar) on the bone itself. The program is directed to normalising bone growth by providing specific nutrients and healing herbs to be found on the website: http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_tendon_bone_healing.html This will not really work over any reasonable time frame without dramatically improving the circulation within the hoof which is achieved by using the external oil treatment see: http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_hoof_oil.html Together these will quite rapidly begin to reverse the problem and you will see how any lameness is reduced as a sign that it is all working. You may start to see things turning around in the first two or three weeks without any additional help. Human - Acid Reflux In the short term acid reflux can be most uncomfortable and in the long term very debilitating. As treatment I suggest:
Home Remedies - The Liver
An unhappy liver can make us most miserable as it does so many essential tasks in our body. An unhappy liver can be seen in blood shot eyes perhaps even yellow ones, with dark circles around them while the body itself may feel like it is floppy and sagging . Dr Vogel thought the efficient functioning of the liver so vital that it effected the balanced state of the whole body. In fact a happy liver equates to a happy heart. You can confirm an unhappy liver by digging 4 fingers under your ribs on your right side as deeply as you can , if it feels uncomfortable then your liver is needing some support. Dandelion coffee can be very effective in making your liver happy by renewing full function. Coffee drinkers will not like to hear this but drinking coffee is like dealing a cruel blow to your liver every time you have a cup. The liver is very much connected to our emotions - so if you feel very up and down may be a cup of dandelion tea is the way to go.
