Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions

The Summer Solstice

With the warmth of the season caressing the land, the celebration of the Summer Solstice brings forth a truly joyous recognition that we can now enjoy the fruits of our labors in the past season. It is not surprising that this same spirit of pleasure and fun ha s carried over into our modern-day recognition of this, the longest day of the year.

Even today, as we enjoy our summer vacations, we, too, reap the bounty of the past season of labor and renew ourselves to face the coming of fall

This week we feature:-

Canine - Nasty Tasting Drops

Place the drops directly and undiluted into their dogs mouth.

Dogs will quite quickly accept this and there is not enough fluid involved for them to spit it out, it is more or less absorbed directly through the mucosa of the mouth.

It does taste nasty and you cannot get a cat to accept it but dogs are much more anxious to please their owners and will quickly get used to the idea. I don't believe you can disguise the taste or smell because this is one of a dogs specialities, their taste and their smell.

Trying to make it look lovely and attractive or something is really ridiculous.

Dogs will react with surprise until they get used to it. You might suggest a single drop per dose for the first day or two before building it up to the full dose.

Equine - Bleeder Treatment and Agistment at Kelloshiel Park, Bathurst NSW. Australia.

At Kelloshiel Park Cath and Robert rehabilitate bleeders regularly, but depending on the elasticity of the scar tissue which forms after each bleed there can be ongoing problems. This is because the edge of the scar which is inflexible and the normal lung tissue which is flexible set up so me of weakness which can tear again.

My bleeder mix works both to strengthen the walls of the alveoli in the lungs but also to soften the scar tissue.

At Kelloshiel Park we take horses for agistment, we can treat them for six or eight weeks with bleeder treatments and build up fitness.

At Kelloshiel we manage any medications and exercise work which is appropriate to support healing rather than just the standard training:

Human - Hives

During the heat of summer in Australia there are sensitive souls who suffer from itchiness, redness and discomfort of hives . Hives or Urticaria is a reaction in the skin characterized by small pale or reddened swellings(wheals). They are a anaphylactic reaction triggered by allergens that may include insect stings, drugs or chemical additives, allergy shots or certain plants and foods. Often the cause is never known.

Hives can result from either a minute or excessively large amount of the offending substance . They can also result from viral infections. The sensitive folk that suffer from this condition can sometimes be most uncomfortable in their own skins.

The symptoms include itching and a slightly raised area of smooth reddened or pale skin. They can suddenly appear and then disappear just as unexpectedly.

My herbal mix includes Chamomile, Euphorbia, Dandelion, Alfalfa, and Hypericum along with the Bach Flowers Rock Rose and Walnut. This combination calms the nervous sytem, strengthens the metabolic system and addresses any allergies that result from insect bites as well as soothing the irritation.

Applying the skin irritant cream will also bring relief.

Home Remedies - Elder Flower

Elder Flower
The Elder, Mother Elder:
Thought to be the tree that Jesus's Cross was fashioned from, previously used in repelling and frustrating witches, used to protect the dead. It helps keep flies away from doors and open windows it is even said that if planted beside stable doors to it will protect against lightening.

It is the easiest plant to propogate as the trees sucker and roots can easily be transplanted

Medicinal:
Elder flowers, mixed with mint and yarrow blossoms, are excellent internal cleansers when fighting flu and colds. A tea of the elder flowers and sassafras is a remedy for acne. Elder flower oil is a remedy for chapped skin. The leaves can be used as an antiseptic poultice for external wounds, and as an insect repellant.

The leaves, bruised, if worn in the hat or rubbed on the face, prevent flies settling on the person. In order to safeguard the skin from the attacks of mosquitoes, midges and other troublesome flies, an infusion of the leaves may be dabbed on with advantage. Gather a few fresh leaves from the elder, tear them from their stalks and place them in a jug, pouring boiling water on them and covering them at once, leaving for a few hours. When the infusion is cold, it is fit for use and should be at once poured off into a bottle and kept tightly corked. It is desirable to make a fresh infusion often. The leaves are said to be valued by the farmer for driving mice away from granaries and moles from their usual haunts.

Elderflower tea from the flowers are used for:-
cold symptoms, coughs, colds, sore throat, arthritis, hayfever, catarrh, inflammations, and ear infections.

Though the German name of the tree, Holdre, is said to signify hollow, it is also said to be mythologically connected with Hulda, the goddess of love; and, like love, the Elder drives away evil spirits and defeats the arts of the sorcerer, being an antidote to all his machinations.

I read with interest that if you do need to cut yourself some wood from the tree, approach the tree with respect; ask first, and listen with an open heart. Don't cut if you get a strong intuition not to. Some people like to leave a small gift of some kind - something practical like untangling ivy, clearing up around the trunk, watering in dry weather or tidying up rubbish from around the tree. An attitude of gratitude and thanks to the tree is a positive act which all of nature responds well to. Others say it matters not to the tree, but the very act of thanking opens up something in us which is very healthy and necessary for our spirits. For this reason it is important to state your thanks simply, and from the heart, each time you take nature's gifts. I also find that it builds up a bond with a tree, a friendship of great power and wisdom. The Elder, of all the trees, has much to teach us, through direct contact, communication and reconnection to past uses and country lore.

No More Nasty Chemicals to Treat Hives

I have suffered from intermittent hives for a number of years. They would appear very quickly, cause me huge discomfort, and disappear almost as quickly. As a result I only recently managed to show a doctor what they looked like.

They were diagnosed as urticaria vasculitis. Basically, no identifiable cause or cure! The only recommendation was to use anti-histamine cream when they came up.

I am a great believer in more natural treatments and that prevention is better than cure, so I searched the internet and came across Robert McDowell's Hives Treatment.

This stuff is amazing. As soon as I feel a tingle, I take the liquid and to date the hives have not surfaced in nearly 3 months. No need to put nasty chemicals on my skin to stop the itch. No embarrassing scratching. I cannot tell you how much of a relief this is.

I am also now using the allergic rhinitis liquid and have found this too to be amazingly effective.

In addition to the great results I have had from the products, the personal service is second-to-none.

Thank you!

Best wishes
