Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions

There is Always A Purpose for Adversity

" Without warning, adversity strikes. Hours before, your world was a placid cove of tranquillity; now it resembles a raging sea. Twelve-foot waves of emotional unrest sweep through your mind, and hurricane-force winds tear at the protective barriers of your heart.

Had you known of its coming, you would have braced yourself for the siege; but adversity rarely announces its arrival. Instead, it attacks with fury through trial, heartache, or an emotional setback.

Adversity hands out pink slips at the office, delivers the untimely news of a loved one's death, underscores the crushing reality of a mate's betrayal, and drives the reality of terminal illness home to the waning heart. None of us know how or when adversity will come. Yet we all know at some point in life each one of us will face the acid test of adversity. The question becomes not when will adversity strike, but how do we handle its gripping reality.

There are two sides to adversity. One side is positive and stimulates spiritual and emotional growth; the other carries the potential to defeat and destroy us. "

Your choice!

This week we feature:-

Canine - Old Dogs disease.

This is very much like the human equivalent of Alzheimer's disease. The symptoms of what we call Cognitive dysfunctional syndrome include signs of altered behaviour during normal routines, poor memory & confusion.

The recommended treatment is as follows.

Brain Circulation Protective Mix & Vitality and Brain Function Tonic
http://www.herbal-treatment.net/herbs_stroke_recovery.html

Make sure your dog has a collar with your address & phone number in case he starts to wander . Have a look at this website; www.cdsindogs.com it's quite comprehensive.

The diet needs to be as natural as possible to assist the body to slow down the degenerative processes.
I recommend that you use a diet of raw meat & bones i.e. beef/mutton bones with meat on them or raw chicken necks and wings, mince, definitely no processed food and snacks. You can also add some freshly cooked vegetables and rice as well.

Equine - Epitheliogenesis Imperfecta (Hairlessness).

Quite a strange disease, I have found that the foals are born with patches of missing hair and this hairless skin can tend to be leathery in appearance ALSO some foals can be born with out hooves!! This would be due to the fact that the hooves are actually made from the same stuff hair is made of, this being Keratin, only in a harder, more compact form. It also states that the condition is due to an autosomal recessive gene SO neither parent should be rebred with!

Anyway, in light of this information we do have some mix's we can try, NO promises as the foal may not even have an hair follicles for hair to grow from!

We have an Alopecia internal mix which is found on the human site at: Make sure to order the Circulatory Shock Mix : http://www.herbal-treatment.net/herbs_alopecia_hair_loss.html

Home Remedies -Head Lice (Pediculosis)

Head Lice or Pediculosis are small, greyish-white, wingless creature about the size of a sesame seed. Whereas nits are the empty egg shells of the hatched lice. They look a bit like dandruff and are stuck firmly to the hair shaft. Nits are much easier to spot than lice.

It is difficult to see them because they are light sensitive but sometimes you can spot them as they crawl through the hair. They are capable of moving from head to head, therefore anyone's head of hair can become a home to lice.

They live by biting the scalp and sucking out the blood. Their saliva contains an antiseptic, which can cause a mental slowing down if the host is continuously bitten over a long period of time. This is thought to be the original meaning of the term "nitwit.".

Head lice lay oval, hard, whitish nits (eggs), on the hair shaft, usually less than one-half-inch from the scalp. Often nits can be mistaken for dandruff or droplets of hair spray. Nits are firmly attached to the hair shaft with a natural glue substance. Head lice are usually found behind the ears, and near the neckline at the back of the neck, or the nape. Head lice are rarely found on the body, eyelashes or eyebrows. The main problem caused by head lice is severe itching from their bites.

The life of a head louse is about a month. The female will lay eggs on the hair shaft at the rate of approximately 4 per day. These eggs hatch in 7-10 days. Within another 10 days, the newly hatched louse can begin the cycle all over again. With human blood to live on, during their 30-day life span, it is not unusual for female lice to lay close to 100 nits. Although it is arguable how long an adult head louse can live without blood, some claim it is as long as 2 - 5 days without being on a person. Nits can survive for up to ten days before they will hatch.

Preventing head lice .
  • If your child has long hair - tie it back, or even better plait it, when they are in the company of other children.
  • When brushing your child's hair in the morning before school, put one drop of either lavender or tea tree oil (whichever smell they prefer) onto the brush. The oil rests on the hair (not the scalp) and deters lice from settling into the hair.
  • Brush the hair before bed as well - regular brushing dissuades nits from hanging around.
  • Once a week do a quick nit check. Look behind the ears, under the fringe and at the nape of the neck for the cream coloured, dandruff-like nits. If there are just a few eggs follow this with a shampoo and then comb through the hair with a fine tooth nit comb.
  • Use conditioner (a tea tree one is ideal) to make the job easier. Rinse the conditioner out and then follow with a Quassia Bark rinse .
  • You may choose to regularly use a Tea-Tree based shampoo.
Do It Yourself Lice Treatment
  • Due to the fact that the scalp is sensitive and very absorbant it is now generally accepted that regular use of organophosphate based head lice treatments on children is not a good idea. There are safer plant based alternatives.
  • Add about ten drops of Lavender, Tea-Tree or Geranium essential oil to a cupful of Olive oil. Massage the oil into the scalp and leave for about two hours. Shampoo the oil out of the hair and then, using conditioner, comb the hair thoroughly with a fine-toothed comb. Aim to get the nits off the hair shaft. Rinse out the conditioner and then rinse through a Quassia Bark infusion. Leave this in the hair and dry as normal.

To make the infusion soak a large handful of Quassia Bark chips in a one and a half litres of cold water overnight. Strain through a colander and then it is ready for use. If you catch the rinse in a bowl it can be used to treat two or more heads. The rinse is very safe, yet it might dry out the scalp a little.

Count the day you use the olive oil blend as day 1. Do a Quassia rinse (on dry or wet hair) for days 3, 5, 7, 9 and 10. This covers the cycle of any hatching eggs that might have been missed. Make up a new batch of the rinse for each day. Treat everyone in the family at the same time.
  • Apply Tea Tree oil -massage one capful in to scalp and hair, wrap in warm towel and wait 10 minutes, wash out with mix of shampoo and a few drops of trea tree oil.
  • Neem products based on an extract of seeds from the Neem tree, widely used in India. According to recent tests, a shampoo containing Neem seed extract was found to clear head lice infestation in children after only two applications.
  • Fennel Oil has also been used successfully.
  • Remember that head lice will attack anyone; even the cleanest family from the best of homes is not immune to an outbreak of lice. Head lice is very common, girls with long hair are particularly susceptible.
Environmental Protection Measures
  • To prevent reinfestation, all clothing, towels, bedding, pillows and stuffed animals should be thoroughly laundered once all those with head lice begin their treatment. Laundry should be washed in hot water (120° F) and dried in a hot dryer or dry cleaned if not washable. Vacuum sofas and chairs.
  • Combs, brushes and hair accessories should be soaked for at least 15 minutes in hot water (over 120°F, equal to hot tap water in most homes).
  • Unwashable items can be enclosed in plastic bags, and securely tied for two weeks. If you have freezing temperatures, 32°F or lower in your area, place plastic bags outside for several days. Head lice cannot survive freezing temperatures.
  • Teach children never to share combs, brushes, hats, scarves or hair accessories. Instruct them to put all mittens, scarves and hats inside coat sleeves or in their backpacks.
  • Thoroughly vacuum all mattresses, carpeting, furniture and baby safety car seats
