Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions

Robert's Shoulder Reconstruction Surgery

Dear Friends of Herbal Treatments,

This is just about my last day typing, until I am out of the brace my right arm will be constrained for approximately six weeks after my surgery next Tuesday .

I get a great deal of my pleasure each day in corresponding personally with all of you who write in for advice or to send progress reports on ongoing treatments and I am proud that we are still able to provide this personal and rapid response to your our clients. Nowadays of course I have help from my wife Cath and also from George, Kate, Judith and Catherine who deal with standard responses and follow-up in areas of their own special expertise.

For the next six weeks however, I will be completely unable to type and enormously frustrated in not being able to answer any of my mail personally. I will have a great deal of time on my hands (more than usual as my sports and the work I do on our property will also be put on hold for the interim). I will therefore be reading all the mail and dictating responses as required to the crew above.

I am sure said "crew" will be very pleased when I am able to get back to work and stop breathing down their necks.

Thank you for your patience.
Robert.

Wait Up!! How about more details?

Well, late last year I dislocated my shoulder while hang gliding and the physiotherapy, massage, exercise and herbs I have been having since then have restored my health and strength but the range of movement in my right shoulder is limited due to tearing of some of the ligaments in my shoulder which will not repair unless re-attached. This is the surgery I am having on Tuesday.

And yes, I will be on a program of herbal bone and ligament healing herbs very like the one I provide to my horse clients and I most certainly will be on my pre-operative and Golden Staph protective programs as the very last thing I want to have to deal with is a post operative infection or a slow recovery.

I did just get back enough strength to fly my Hang Glider in the last few weeks but I have just packed it away again until around September.

There are plenty of folk about (including some of the "team" above) who recommend I take up a more docile sport, but I somehow don't feel old enough yet to settle for lawn bowls.

This week we feature:-

Canine - Cataracts

I would recommend my herbal Eye Treatment which will quickly bring your dog's eye health up to its maximum potential. At the very least I would expect to stop further deterioration.

After this with continued use there is the potential to reverse any eye condition including cataracts although beyond a certain point I don't expect to get full vision back.

It is certainly the place to start however and the mixture is safe, simple and inexpensive. It can be found on my website at the following link:
http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_eye_wash.html

Please follow dosage recommendations strictly as the eyewash is concentrated & requires dilution before you bathe the eye.

Equine - Infection Immunity

Molasses & Garlic, Rosehip, Chamomile, & Fenugreek Tea recipe;

To boost a horses immunity against infection, I recommend that you soak 1 kilo of unpeeled garlic cloves( just roll the corns underfoot slightly) into a 5 litre tub of molasses, let sit for 3 weeks then it's ready to use. Dose half a cup daily cloves & all.

Chamomile tea; I've included the link for chamomile which describes how to mix & dose.
http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_chamomile_flowers.html

Rosehips tea;1 litre of rosehips, 500ml am & 500ml pm is o.k. You cannot overdose on this.See link for use & dosage;
http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_rosehips_granules.html

Fenugreek Tea;A herbal tea made from Fenugreek Seeds. Two dessertspoons of seeds added to 1 litre of boiling water and allowed to cool. This is divided into two portions seeds and all and split between morning and afternoon feeds.

1 cup of Crushed millet & linseed made into a porridge & halved feed am & pm.

4. Diet:In general a good basic diet is alfalfa(lucerne) meadow or oaten hay & oats. Along with a little fresh green pasture, as these three feed substances will provide the bulk, vitamins, minerals, protein & energy your horse requires.

Usually I would suggest only changing the diet to a natural one that is to say no pellets or prepared feed or supplements of any sort. Just normal grains and dried feed and as much green pick as possible. Even to the extent of leading a horse down the roadway so that he may choose to pick at specific herbs and weeds by instinct every couple of days.

Human - Hot Flushes

There are a range of herbs suitable for addressing this very common condition for women who are either in perimenopause or menopause. Symptoms are due to a change in the production of hormones; progesterone and oestrogen. Oestrogen is not just a sex hormone , receptors are actually found in our heart, liver, bones, breasts, brain, skin , vagina and bladder and it is also essential for the functioning of the bodies thermostat - hence hot flushes!

1. Firstly, we do use a lot of the following mix formulated for change of life conditions and associated discomfort.
http://altivoe.com/herbs_change_of_life.html
Vervain, Wild Yam, Euphorbia, Phytolacca, Sarsaparilla, Pulsatilla, Rosehips, Liquorice and Blue Flag in a Bach Flower base of Cerato, Wild Oat and Scleranthus. This mix includes a number of herbs that rebalance hormone levels, support adrenals, reduce symptoms and give strength to your nervous system.

2. Many women have had success with Black Cohosh, Ziziphus, Wild Yam, Chaste tree and Dong Quai. Chaste tree which balances levels of oestrogen and progesterone should be taken before rising to stimulate the pituitary gland which triggers release for hormones.

3. Chamomile tea on a regular basis assists you to manage the emotional upheavals that can occur.

4. Consume low GI foods (complex carbohydrates) which help stabilize blood sugers, also helpful are flax seed oils, fish oils and olive oil .

5. Avoid foods that make the blood acidic as they increase hot flushes and take calcium from the bones ie avoid white flour, sugar, carbonated drinks, orange and apple juices.

Home Remedies - Wart Removal

Warts are infections caused by viruses that are present everywhere, making them among the most common of all childhood skin conditions. The culprit will be one of more than 70 types of human papillomaviruses. They are spread when the virus touches a part of the skin where the outer protective layer is broken, either by minor trauma or by moisture. This happens most commonly on the fingers, elbows, knees, and the bottoms of the feet. Warts on the bottom of the feet are called plantar warts - named for the plantar surface (sole) of the foot.

Some people get warts more easily than other people. Warts are more common in children than in adults, partly because of their less mature immune systems and partly because they spend more time in wet-floored locker rooms and in active, close play. Wearing something on the feet in locker rooms and at the pool can prevent many plantar warts.

Most warts will eventually go away on their own, expelled by the body's immune system. About 25% are gone within 3-6 months and 65% disappear within 2 years. Warts will not leaves scars, though some of the more aggressive wart therapies might.

Treatments abound, you will have heard of all sorts of home remedies. Varying from:-

* Banana peel -taping a patch on before bed. The active ingredient in most over-the-counter remedies is salicylic acid, a natural substance found in many plants (willow bark) and most fruits.
* Milk Thistle milk.
* Lavender Oil
* Celandine.

* Thuja Oil :- A specific concentration of Thuja oil is an effective wart removal remedy as it contains the main molecular component thujone. It is now believed that thujone primes the response of an immune system element called the gamma-delta T cell when used as a wart removal remedy. According to Dr. Bukowski from the Harvard Medical School, “We know from other studies that these gamma-delta T cells in the blood are the first line of defense against many types of viral infections and bacterial infections and they even have some anti tumor activity.” http://altivoe.com/herbs_warts.html

* Hypnosis has also been tried as a means of activating the immune system. When studied scientifically, hypnotic suggestion has proven to be as powerful as many conventional medical treatments at getting rid of warts.

* 'Charming warts' is particularly effective with children, and is discussed in leading medical textbooks I've had success with dabbing warts with paint and letting children watch them glow under a black light! For added impact, I've sometimes pressed a painted wart onto a piece of filter paper to make a spot, and then burned the paper. I tell the child it will fall off in two weeks - and it does!

* Buying /Selling warts- also works for some.

Mark Twain's quaint solution, then, is consistent with the latest medical science:

"Why, you take your cat and go and get in the graveyard 'long about midnight when somebody that was wicked has been buried; and when it's midnight a devil will come, or maybe two or three, but you can't see 'em, you can only hear something like the wind, or maybe hear 'em talk; and when they're taking that feller away, you heave your cat after 'em and say, 'Devil follow corpse, cat follow devil, warts follow cat, I'm done with ye!' That'll fetch ANY "wart."
