Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 19 March 2006 Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions"Creativity may begin as a state of un-ease or dis-ease, touchiness, anxious ness, intolerance and edginess. Crazy - we often do not recognise these states of agitation as a prelude to expressing our creative desires, but as a reason to consult a doctor, have counselling or other therapy." This week we feature:-
Feline - Deaf Cat When an animal or human loses their hearing, they rely on other sensory stimulation such as the vibration of their own voice. However, hearing loss shouldn't affect your cat's quality of life. Here are some tips to improve communication, protect your cat, and preserve your loving bond. If a deaf cat can't hear the truck or the dog, she can't avoid the danger. Keep deaf cats inside or enclosed space. The Cat Locator ( www.uniquedistributors.com) pendant attaches to the collar and emits a tone when the handheld applicator is activated, to help you find your deaf cat. You can also use the collar's vibration (much like a pager or cell phone vibrates) as a training signal to curb undesirable behaviors. A deaf cat sleeps very soundly, is easily startled, and may bite or hiss more as a result. He can still feel vibrations though. Stomp your foot or slam the door to warn him of your presence, and head off a startle or bite reflex. Deaf cats rely on sight, so use visual signals to communicate. Instead of the can opener whirr, toss a toy into his line of sight to call him to dinner. Cats can be "clicker trained" using a flashlight instead of the clicker sound to identify a desirable behavior. See www.clickertraining.com for more information or do some research on the web. Older kitties often become clingy and cry for you to "rescue" them. Try wearing very strong, distinctive cologne on your ankles to help kitty find you more easily with her nose. Cats may lose hearing only in certain ranges. A high-pitched "silent" dog whistle might get your cat's attention. Meowing/screaming a lot can also be a sign of other age-related problems, such as high blood pressure, senility, or kidney disease. Have you had a vet check to determine if something else is causing the crying? You can definitely try Rescue remedy. It is given AM & PM minimally and up to 4 x daily without any problems. The remedy is completely safe to use and is tasteless, so squirt straight into mouth. It will usually take 12 weeks of continuous treatment before a permanent change is seen. We can make a mix specific for your cat and any specific anxieties they have.
Canine - Honking Like a Goose Is your dog honking like a goose which can be an indication that the trachea is collapsing. Pulmonary oedema which is fluid in lung tissue caused by congestive heart failure may also be the most likely cause for this coughing you are hearing. This would be helped with a Lung support Mix. Order in the special preparations box as Lung support canine. Or a coarse, dry, hacking cough like it sounds as if the dog needs to "clear it's throat" this cough will be triggered by any extra activity or exercise. This could be Kennel cough. Many dogs that acquire Kennel Cough will cough every few minutes, all day long. Their general state of health and alertness will be unaffected, they usually have no rise in temperature, and do not lose their appetite. Look At the Kennel cough mix with contains the lung support herbs as well as herbs to treat the infection. http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_kennel_cough.html Has your dog been wormed lately? As internal parasites can cause coughing. Use an over the counter worm mix recommended by Vet. Heartworm will also appear as coughing as an initial symptom. http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_heartworm_treatment.html It may be best to have a Vet check to rule out the more serious conditions. Equine - Fly Bites If you horse is prone to fly bites or other insect irritation your first step is to cover your horse in a light cotton or shade cloth type horse rug & neck rug during biting season, fly boots that cover the legs are also an option. To discourage flies from breeding make sure yards are clean of manure & cover compost heaps, you can even grow plants that are insect repellents around your yards like Tansy, citronella scented Geraniums, Lavender, Rue, Elder and Wormwood. If there are hairless patches it is often difficult to encourage regrowth of hair as the parasites actually damage the hair follicles but when the inflammmation has ceased Comfrey ointment from health food stores or rosemary oil rubbed in once or twice a day can expediate hair growth. I would also recommend supplementing the diet with Chamomile Flowers. Chamomile has many properties and helps various conditions ranging from skin and nervous system problems to acting as an antispasmodic and a digestive aid. http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_chamomile_flowers.html Dose rate is 4 dessertspoons made into a tea with 1 litre of boiling water and given with feed. This can also be used to dab on the skin to soothe irritated areas. To treat any secondary infections caused by the bites you can dose with Colloidal silver internally see link for information; http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_colloidal_silver_antibiotic.html This treatment is also valuable to dab on externally any infected lesions. As you head towards the insect season have a try of my antiparasitic spray applied topically To repel the insects. http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_anti_parasite.html Also add 1 cup each of crushed White millet & linseed to the diet half am & pm. Mix straight into food or alternatively soak overnight in boiling water halve & add to food. This will directly improve coat & skin condition. If the situation is chronic you may require a course of blood cleansers to be taken over a 12 week period. This will clear the blood of the build up of toxins, boost immune and elimination systems & actively and positively discharge waste products of infection and inflammation. http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_blood_cleanser.html Human - Immunity Boosting to Fight Viral Attacks All you have to do is enhance your body's natural immune system and make it as strong as it possibly can be. You should be aware that modern day living with its increasingly sedentary lifestyle and excessive consumption of junk foods, depresses the immune system. To add to this, antibiotics and other pharmaceutical weapons invade the body and battle with the disease as well as the immune system. Increasing work pressures, poor stress management, pollutants in the air, pesticides in the food all add up to ruining our disease fighting capacity. But remember, you are as strong as your immune system allows you to be. What you choose to put into your mouth accounts for your first line of defence against disease. Irrespective of exercising everyday, having a positive state of mind, keeping your sexuality under control, you can upset everything by eating foods which subtract from your health. Refined flour, white sugar, processed and canned foods, deep fried foods, red meat can damage your health and depress immunity. Eating foods in their most natural forms like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds is the easiest way to enhance immunity. Some vitamins and herbs have special immune enhancing powers. Your immune system is a very complex defence system that is your first line of protection in all matters related to your health. In simplest terms, it fights off potentially harmful infectious organisms in a constant effort to maintain a healthy state. Try to be aware of your personal circumstances, your stress levels and how you manage them. Do you know how you relax best? I know someone who finds it very difficult to relax except when they sit by a river or have a bath. If you are under a lot of pressure you could look at taking our Burn Out Mix and or our popular Maritime Pine Bark which we recommend for all patients who have some compromising health problems. http://www.herbal-treatments.com/herbs_burn_out.html http://www.herbal-treatments.com/maritime_pine_bark_extract_pycnogenol.html The reported symptoms of most influenza strains in humans range from typical influenza-like symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches) to eye infections (conjunctivitis), pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, viral pneumonia, and other severe and life-threatening complications. Home Remedies - Fennel
The Romans were very fond of the young shoots, eating both for the flavor as well as in the belief that it would control obesity. Even the original Greek name for fennel was derived from the word "maraino," meaning to grow thin. This belief was held even as late as the herbalist Culpepper's time when he wrote of fennel that "all parts of the plant are much used in drink or broth to make people lean that are too fat." There may be some backing to that belief since the seeds are known to be a slight appetite suppressant. The Puritans would chew the seeds during periods of holiday fasting to stave off hunger. Fennel was considered on of the nine sacred herbs to treat disease during Medieval times. It was also thought to fight off evil spirits, which is why it was jammed into keyholes and hung on doorways, especially on Midsummer's Eve. Like most of the herbs, fennel is native to Southern Europe. It likes the hot, full day sun, does best in a moist soil, but can thrive in rocky, dry, soils. In fact, once established, fennel needs very little water all summer. Its height, up to 7' tall, makes it a decorative fence line plant. A tea made with a few fresh sprigs of Fennel or a level teaspoon of seeds will relieve indigestion. An infusion of the seeds is an excellent carminative, especially for babies. Use 1 teaspoon (5ml) of infusion for colic and gas. Fennel is an effective treatment for respiratory congestion and is a common ingredient in cough remedies. Fennel may assist some people to lose weight. Fennel can give relief from hiccoughs. A tea made from Fennel helps to stimulate the flow of breast milk. It is sometimes added to baby formula to aid digestion. Chew the seeds as a breath freshener. Reader Feed Back "Kit's Cough" My cat, Kit, was rescued from the road about three years ago. He thinks he is a dog because those are his playmates. He is a completely indoor cat as I do have a dog that kills cats and we almost lost Kit when he was still little.....but he pulled through, so i made him a housecat. He is tiger striped and basically a healthy cat. Once I gave him vaccines as a kitten, the only vaccines he gets is Rabies which is mandated by the state. He eats a very high quality no grain kibble, which he loves, with seameal , some veggies and a supplement, plus digestive enzymes. I thought Kit was lonely so when I rescued another cat from the woods, which was only a few weeks old, and a female, I thought they would get along....and they do....they romp and play in their upstairs abode with all the plants and toys they need. Recently, I heard Kit coughing as if he had asthma and I had heard that indoor animals do get a cough from the environment indoors. I opened the windows a little as it is winter here so they could have fresh air. The cough continued and i thought, maybe i should take him to the vet,.... But before I did this, I thought, what about McDowells's Kennel Cough remedy. It worked on the dogs, maybe it works on cats too. Sure enough 2cc in the cats food once a day for seven days and the cat never coughed again and appears to be feeling just fine. In fact, Kit loved the taste of the mixture so much that he ate all his food....... I most certainly recommend all of McDowell's products for all animals.....if my bird coughs, I may try that too!! karen marie bordonaro We value your feedback so much that we are making it easier for you to send us a sentence or two.
