Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions

Gratitude and Grief

Gratitude is that feeling of being thankful, which is life affirming and energy restoring. Affirming life and restoring energy are critical mental and physical factors when coping with the death of a loved one. Here are a few ideas to think about in using gratitude as a new routine in your daily life and to help you cope with your grief and loss.

1. Start the first thing in the morning using gratitude as a wake-up ritual. It gets you going in the right direction. It positively balances much of the negativity that normally floods the mind at the beginning of the day when grieving.

2. Make a list each evening of the things you are grateful for. Include both little things as well as big things. What is big or little depends on how you perceive. Some of the little stuff might be all of the things we take for granted like the clean air we breathe, the people who greet you by name and smile.

3. When grieving, if anger hangs around too long in your thoughts, switch your attention to a person, place, or thing you are grateful for. Anger is an extremely physical and emotional drain. Use your self-talk to change the scene: "I have this anger and rightly so, but I am choosing to be thankful for all of the help I am receiving from my friends. I am truly grateful."

4. Develop the attitude of gratitude to include yourself. You have made it through the funeral, the holiday, the trip to the lawyer's office, the condolences of friends and people you didn't know, and a host of other stressful events. Say to yourself, "I'm grateful for the courage I showed, and my persistence and stamina."

5. Use a symbol to remind you to express gratitude. Your symbol can be anything you feel is appropriate, from something your loved one owned to a trinket he/she bought for you, or an object that was a gift. Keep it handy. When you see it, use it as a cue to check your attitude. Then immediately feel gratitude despite your pain. This act alone will focus you on a positive path.

6. Practice this everyday, you will reap the benefits; or, as Sarah Ban Breathnach in "Simple Abundance" puts it, "You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you." Thanksgiving will summon inner peace.

In summary, gratitude is an inspirational force that can add another significant factor in the development of a strong inner life. It causes us to draw our attention to the good, the beautiful, the whole and hearty; it will open up a host of possibilities, which is exactly what we need when in pain.

This week we feature:-

Feline - Tick Bite

After a tick bite often the cat is given antibiotics which do not really address the fundamental problem which can be summarized as a toxic shock to the metabolism.

The treatment is simple from a herbalist view. Address the fundamentals of the immune system and the metabolic harmony which have lost direction. Support the organs and processes of elimination and the whole sorry situation can begin to repair.

I would therefore commend the following program for the situation:

1. The Maritime Pine Bark to support the immune system found at:
http://www.herbal-treatments.com/cat_maritime_pine_bark_extract_pycnogenol.html

2. The Blood Poisoning mix found at:
http://www.herbal-treatments.com/cat_blood_poisoning.html

3. And the Kidney Weakness to support and clear the adrenal system from any subsequent Kidney damage if appropriate at:
http://www.herbal-treatments.com/cat_kidney_weakness.html

You can also add Dandelion Tea for the Liver , 2 teaspoons of the granules mixed into food and Rosehips Tea for the Kidneys, simply steep 1 bag ( rosehips) to 1 cup hot water, cool, and mix with food 1/2 in am and the rest in pm.

Canine - Autoimmune Disease

For auto immune disorders start with the conditioning mix, see link;
http://www.herbal-dogkeeping .com/dog_conditioning_mix.html

As well use a separate mix of Liquorice and Comfrey extract, the dose is 5 drops twice daily.

Comfrey is high in allantoin , which is a cell proliferant which ensures that the new cells which are produced after tissue damage are not only made more rapidly (approximately 3 times faster) but are also made in the exact replica of the original healthy cell that they are now growing new ones of, therefore you don't get scar tissue. Repair is quicker and more accurate. Liquorice contains hormonal stimulus of varying kinds, particularly to stimulate the production of cortisol in its natural form.

I also recommend giving crushed French White Millet and linseed at a dose rate of 2 dessertspoons made into porridge, fed once daily as it contains the mineral silica which is an important mineral supporting hair, skin and nails. This also benefits the bones and joints of your canine friends.

Add rosehip tea to the diet; 1 cup will last for 2 days. Halve and mix with food, although some dogs will drink it like water and quite like the taste, give 1 cup daily as a drink to aid kidney and adrenal function and support the energy levels.

Follow the recommendations for at least a full blood cycle of 12 weeks and you should see improvement in 4 weeks.

Equine - Giving Horses a Lift Coming into Winter

Client asks Robert:

I have a riding school with 16 horses and was looking for some herbs that will just give the horses a lift coming into winter they are on one feed per day of Calm Performer Pellets Oaten Chaff rice bran , they have good pasture and are all in good condition, I was thinking of Chamomile and Rosehips, can I feed this regularly with out harming them, and will it be of benefit to them. I have heard that rosehips are a diuretic?

Look forward to your reply and thankyou

Robert Replies:

Rosehips and Chamomile may be given to foals and grown horses, safely and regularly with no side effects of any sort.

Rosehips primarily work as a kidney and adrenal tonic and provide masses of Vitamin C and Iron, usually best made into a tea and used cold to dampen feed.

Chamomile is primarily a digestive system tonic and skin and nervous system calmer.

Regards
Robert

Human - Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a simple condition to heal by the use of herbs.
http://altivoe.com/herbs_acid_reflux.html

It is best to treat acid reflux before it becomes an habitual and chronic problem as it can develop into an Hiatal Hernia condition.

In adults, acid reflux tendencies may be exacerbated by particular drinks such as Coke and Coffee or Apple and Orange Juice in excess and by acid forming foods such as too much sugar and white flour in the diet. You should make an effort to reduce these aggravating substances permanently in your diet.

Slippery Elm powder when taken daily is soothing and healing of the gastrointestinal tract. Slippery Elm can be added to mashed banana, stewed fruit or yoghurt.

Each dose is taken in small swallows and for a continuous period of 12 weeks. Slippery Elm provides a protective lining to the mucosal lining of the oesophagus and stomach, and in 12 weeks should heal any irritated areas. It may be that slippery elm would be required as an ongoing addition to your diet.

The herbal mix to be used in conjunction with slippery Elm is taken three times per day as well as 3 cups of either hot or cold Chamomile tea to support the relaxation of the nervous system response involved in the reflux response.

It is often the way that people who suffer from this condition like life to be sweet and acceptable so they may use food as a reward and actually use eating as an alternative to swallowing everyday life stresses. This gradually creates spasms around the sphincter between the stomach and oesophagus.

It is important to make meal times as pleasant as possible.

Home Remedies - Coriander Detox

Corainder
Dr Omura , a physician, found that fresh cilantro (coriander) removes heavy metals from the body in less than two weeks.

He also discovered that his patients had fewer colds and flu after removing the heavy metals because it seems that viruses and bacteria like to congregate in organs contaminated by heavy metals. His patients also had fewer Herpes outbreaks after removing these heavy metals.

Cilantro Detox Juice Recipe:
  • 4-6 apples
  • 1 medium beet
  • 1/3 of a fennel bulb
  • juice of 1/2 lime
  • large handful of cilantro
Put all the ingredients through a juicer and enjoy. Serves 1-2.

    Cilantro Detox Pesto:
    Ingredients:
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1/3 cup Brazil nuts (selenium)
  • 1/3 cup sunflower seeds (cysteine)
  • 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (zinc, magnesium)
  • 2 cups packed fresh coriander (cilantro, Chinese parsley) (vitamin A)
  • 2/3 cup flaxseed oil
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice (vitamin C)
  • 2 tsp dulse powder
  • Sea salt to taste

Process the coriander and flaxseed oil in a blender until the coriander is chopped. Add the garlic, nuts and seeds, dulse and lemon juice and mix until the mixture is finely blended into a paste. Add a pinch to sea salt to taste and blend again. Store in dark glass jars. It freezes well, so purchase coriander in season and fill enough jars to last through the year.
