Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions

How long do herbs take to work? We are often asked this question here at herbal treatments.

Herbs can be likened to intensive nutrition on one level, full of vitamins and minerals. On another level they work gently and surely , acting out of their vital force, not just through their active ingredients (which are often extracted or even man made to create not-so-safe medicinal products), but all that they encompass in combination with other herbs and the life forces of the both the patient and herbalist.

Herbal mixes may take up to 3 to 4 weeks to have a noticeable effect, though of course this varies. Some people may notice a change with in days, we are all so individual . It also depends on whether it's a chronic or more acute problem - how long the patient has been harbouring the problem and of course their emotional attitude; whether they are closed to change or not, whether they are dealing with negative feelings, sometimes unconsciously, such as resentment, un-forgiveness, hate or poor self esteem.. A deep shock or disturbing personal experience may have been the trigger to a serious illness, this can usually be seen when you look back over a few years of a patients history.

This week we feature:-

Feline - Ear Tumours

Unfortunately ear tumors are not uncommon on white cats. The most common include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and basal cell tumor.

Depending on the tumor type there may or may not be an underlying cause. Chronic inflammation may predispose to tumor formation and prolonged sunlight exposure may predispose certain tumors.

Adenocarcinoma tumors are seen most commonly in middle-aged to older cats with light colored fur or skin and occurs after exposure to sunlight while Basal cell tumor s generally affect middle aged to older cats and are most common in Siamese cats.

Early in the illness, many cats have no clinical signs, and tumors are often incidental findings. Look for :-
  • Skin changes on the ear. Crusts, ulcers or excessive growth of tissue
  • Bleeding, Odour, Discharge, nodular growths.
  • Poor Balance

I recommend supporting your cat's immunity and recovery by using both the melanoma mixes plus the Maritime Pine bark to support the immune system :
    http://www.herbal-treatments.com/cat_maritime_pine_bark_extract_pycnogenol.html

We supply both an topical ointment as wellas an internal herbal mix.

These herbs together support the lymphatic system and the process of rejecting the cancers. " Read more at the following

Canine - Heart Murmur and Cough

There are very specific herbs to support the heart insofar as its electrical regularity and the strength of the muscle are concerned. Heart problems have been a concern of mankind since time began.

There are other herbs which are specifically useful to reverse any degenerative process. I can make up a herbal extract combination to provide you with your best chance of reversing this tendency which has developed in your dog for whatever reason. The treatment comes as a concentrated herbal extract mix and is given at a dose rate of 10 drops mixed into feed twice daily. It can be seen at the following link:
    http://www.herbal-treatments.com.au/dog_heart_tonic.html

If there is a cough associated with the heart murmur , the cough reflects the fluid which accumulates when the heart is not quite up to strength then you need to support the lungs and heart in order to deal with the accumulation of fluid & ineffectiveness of lungs.

    http://www.herbal-treatments.com.au/dog_lung_capacity_mix.html

These herbal treatments are safe to use with orthodox meds.

I also recommend that you place your dog on a diet of raw meat and bones i.e. beef/mutton bones with meat on them or raw chicken necks and wings, mince; definitely no processed food and snacks. You can also add some freshly cooked vegetables and rice.

If your dog is not already on this type of diet, then I suggest that you introduce it slowly.

    Equine - Nervous Episodes

Unusual nervousness, can be triggered by small incidents, accidents and operations. In all instances I recommend the Nervous Rehabilitation Mix, found at:
    http://www.herbal-treatments.com.au/horse_nervous_episode.html

This works to strengthen the nervous system itself. You can slowly begin to re-introduce the horse to the situation that triggers any nervousness, Do only a little at a time after about 3 weeks. I would be taking it slowly if the horse was apprehensive to begin with . Try leading him around shows for a while and then think about riding.

It is fine also to use the Rescue Remedy, as this is great for shock and can be given to him at a show straight in the mouth (it doesn't swab).

    A Recent Testimonial:

"Walter our horse, last time we spoke you recomended the nervous episode mix with regard to his floating issues.I purchased a bottle and followed the directions. I started out with short trips in the float around the block, there was some sweating but not nearly as heavy as previous occasions, Gradually building up the distance to my instructors property for lessons and eventually a lesson at the end off our 4th float trip with the nervous episode mix. All signs were very positive, minimal sweating still very tense but gradual improvement in levels of relaxation."

    Human - Gallstones

Gallstones are rocklike collections of material that form inside the gallbladder. Different types exist, and they are categorized by their primary composition; cholesterol stones are most common followed by pigment, then mixed stones. The stones form when there is an imbalance or change in the composition of bile.

Normally, bile acids, lecithin, and phospholipids help to maintain cholesterol solubility in bile. When bile becomes supersaturated with cholesterol, it crystallizes and forms a nidus for stone formation. Calcium and pigment also may be incorporated in the stone. Impaired gallbladder motility, biliary stasis, and bile content predispose people to the formation of gallstones.

Gallbladder sludge is crystallization within bile without stone formation. Sludge may be a step in the formation of stones, or it may occur independently.

The cause of gallstones varies. Some stones form when there is too much cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile. (Bile is a liquid that helps the body digest fats.)

Other stones form if there are not enough bile salts or if the gallbladder fails to empty properly.

There are some differences between the Cholesterol and Calcium stone mixes but I wouldn't wait to get the definitive diagnosis before making a start on both the acute mix which is fine for both types of stone also and probably the Cholesterol Stone mix which contains the more powerful liver tonics.

All gall stones are due to an imbalance in the liver function and often associated also with your own peculiar way of handling stresses in your life.

A diet rich in sugars and fats as well as one having a low fibre content, is the most likely contributing factor to the formation of gallstones in humans, the specific underlying reasons or causes of the gallstones remains unknown and there could be other underlying reasons for the formation of gallstones. Other contributory conditions to gallstones could be the presence of disorders such as IBD and other digestive tract disorders. Women are at a greater risk of developing gallstones compared to men and are three times more likely to have it on average, people over the age of forty are also a high risk group. Physiological factors such as obesity is also a very real contributor to the presence of gallstones in the body, at the same time rapid weight loss can also result in the formation of gallstones in the body.

    Recomendations:-

  • To minimise the risk of Gallstone formation, avoid fatty foods such as fried foods, full cream dairy foods, chocolates, rich cakes and desserts, biscuits, slices and snack foods.
  • Try to cook and make salad dressings with olive oil and avoid deep frying and frying foods in butter.
  • It is best to avoid 'crash' diets, as losing weight too quickly is associated with an increased risk of Gallstones.
  • Lecithin granules or capsules may help with the emulsification (break down) of fats.
  • Gallstones have been linked to young people who consume high amounts of sugar. A low-sugar, high fibre diet is thought to help reduce the stone-forming potential of bile.
  • Aim for 3-4 serves each day of fresh fruits and vegetables. Include 4-6 serves of wholegrain cereals in your daily diet. Gallstones are also less common in vegetarians.
  • Reduce cholesterol in the diet; cholesterol is found in animal products e.g., red meat, dairy products and eggs etc.
  • Eat regular meals, 5 or 6 small meals per day. This helps to avoid overloading the digestive system and allows the body more time to digest any fats.
  • Try to drink 6 to 8 glasses of fresh water daily to help the natural elimination processes of the body.

After starting on the herbal mix you should start to feel benefits from the early weeks of treatment in terms of lack of pressure or pain and more comfortable digestion, but the stones will only slowly reduce in size. Expect 3 months for size changes to show up on scans and 6 months total treatment time on average.

Home Remedies - The Remarkable Lemon

The Remarkable Lemon Lemons and limes are an excellent source of Vitamin C, one of the most important antioxidants in nature. Vitamin C is one of the main antioxidants found in food and the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body. Vitamin C travels through the body neutralizing any free radicals with which it comes into contact in the aqueous environments in the body both inside and outside cells. Free radicals can interact with the healthy cells of the body, damaging them and their membranes, and also cause a lot of inflammation, or painful swelling, in the body. This is one of the reasons that vitamin C has been shown to be helpful for reducing some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Since free radicals can damage blood vessels and can change cholesterol to make it more likely to build up in artery walls, vitamin C can be helpful for preventing the development and progression of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease.

Vitamin C is also vital to the function of a strong immune system. The immune system's main goal is to protect you from illness, so a little extra vitamin C may be useful in conditions like colds, flu's, and recurrent ear infections.

Lemons are the only food which are anionic (alkaline). The catch is that this is only true of fresh lemons.

After about 30 minutes of exposure to air (oxygen), lemon juice becomes cationic. The confusion comes when one thinks in terms of acid and alkaline. Lemon juice would always be thought of as acid, but, while fresh, is anionic (which corresponds to alkaline). Other than fresh lemon juice, the only other thing that is purely anionic is pure calcium.

To explain anionic and cationic... an ion is a molecule with an electric charge. An anion contains the smallest amount of energy known to man. It is a negative charged ion. Its electrons orbit around the nucleus in a clockwise direction. An Anion corresponds to alkaline , while a cation corresponds to acid. It is a positive charged ion. Its electrons orbit in a counter-clockwise direction.

According to Reams, anions are attracted to the Van Allen radiation belt around the earth. Cations are attracted to the earth itself. Cationic foods include potatoes, carrots, beets and other root vegetables, which grow into the earth because of their cationic composition. They are not wholly cationic, however; the flowering, leafy part is anionic, which is why it grows upwards (actually, even the roots are part cationic and anionic, but mostly cationic). Corn, tomatoes, etc., are mostly anionic and grow upwards, but their cationic root parts grow down into the earth.

According to Reams, the key issue here concerns our digestive process. The gastric juice produced by the liver is anionic. All foods (except fresh lemons) are a varying mixture of cationic and anionic. When the anionic gastric juices come into contact with cationic foods, the two ions react to each other, much like vinegar and baking soda, and energy is released to be used by the body. Let me quote from Dr. Reams, ''We do not live off the food we eat, we live off the energy from the food we eat. The anion rotates in a clockwise direction. The cation in a counter-clockwise direction. Resistance is created when these two moving forces, rotating in opposite directions, collide. The measure of the resistance, in chemistry, is called ''pH''. When a person gets sick, there are not enough anionic substances present to supply the energy required.

Dr. Reams used fresh lemon juice as a part of a restorative therapy with his clients (one part juice to nine parts distilled water). The juice provided anionic substances to their livers. Non-culinary uses

  • Lemon hair lightener - Lemon juice applied to the hair is a natural hair lightener.
  • Insecticide - TheD-limonene in lemon oil is used as a non-toxic insecticide treatment.
  • Acne Treatment - Applying lemon juice to facial blemishes is a popular form of treating acne.
  • Skin bleach - Lemon juice is also believed by many to lighten the skin when applied topically, as it has been suggested that the acids it contains inhibits melanin production. The effectiveness, however, is largely a subject of debate.
  • Lemon is used in facial masks for refreshing the skin.
  • Wood treatment - lemon oil is often used on the unsealed rosewood fingerboards of guitars and other stringed instruments. It should not be used on maple fingerboards, as these are generally sealed and the oil would just stay on the surface.
  • Lemon juice is often used to clean the inside of animal skins prior to taxidermy.
  • Natural deodorants are generally made from lemon extracts. Raw lemon can be used as a short term deodorant.

    Lemon alternatives

Several other plants have a similar taste to lemons. In recent times, the Austarlia bush food "lemon mytle" has become a popular alternative to lemons. The crushed and dried leaves and edible essential oils have a strong, sweet lemon taste. Lemon myrtle is popular in foods that curdle with lemon juice, such as cheesecake and ice cream. Limes are often used instead of lemons.

Many other plants are noted to have a lemon-like taste or scent. Among them arelemon grass lemon balm, lemon thyme, lemon verbena, scented geraniums, certain cultivars of basil, and certain cultivars of mint.
